Income and Education

Many discussions of contemporary racial inequalities point out that Blacks with a given education or holding a specific job receive lower incomes than Whites with similar occupations or educations. The nature of this inequality can be gauged, in part, from the data already presented in Table 18.4. In 1960, Black men with a college education had a median income lower than that of White males with one to three years of high school. Even after the progress of the 1960s, a college educated Black man had a lower median income than a White secondary school graduate in 1969. These differences do not exist between Black and White females, since their incomes for the identical educational level are much more nearly equal, as reported in Table 18.6.
